I have had Gigabit internet for a month and a half now and have gotten decent speeds for about two weeks of that time.
All the speeds I mention below are over a wired connection. When I first got the Gigabit service, speeds were great for about a day. Then the problems started.
I couldn't get consistent speeds. Sometimes it would be Mbps, other times it would be between 50 and Mbps. I worked with Comcast support for over a week - the came onsite twice, changed some outdoor cables, replaced the modem and suggested I also replace my switch and cables. I figured, sure, why not, and picked up a 50ft Cat6a cable and a new unmanaged Gigabit switch, just to be sure there weren't any issues with my setup.
Yet, despite this device being and enterprise class device less than a year old, it was not getting speeds anywhere close to what it should have been. This lasted until about a week ago. Now I am back to Mbps speeds. I have tried connecting directly connecting my laptop to the second port via 3ft Cat6 while the switch is still connected and I get really bad speeds, like 50Mbps bad.
I have also tried connecting directly to the 50ft Cat6 cable and also get worse speed than when connected via the switch.
Almost seems like the modem has some kind of ARP issue when you start changing hardware around. Comcast insists there's a problem on my end. Oh yeah? Then why was it working fine for a few weeks, then all of a sudden it went back to the poor performance I had before something was magically corrected by Comcast? Let me know if anyone has had similar issues and what your resolution was. I am too busy to dump a lot of time into testing this, but trust me, the IT side of me really wants to find what the heck is going on.
It's just hard when you have no visibility into Comcast's network. I have been using the XB6 for almost a year. I did have some issues, but the second tech visit replaced my coax from the pole to my home and he also replaced some connectors on the outside wall of my home and he said varmits were chewing on the drop. I've already had that done too. They've replaced everything between the pole and the modem.
I have had the xb6 for about 2 weeks 2. I am curious if you tried to remove your router out of the equasion and use the Xb6 built in router, that seems to be the only variable that is constant in your setup. Also help me out, what is the advantage of using your own router? It seems to me adding another device into the signal chain could degrade the signal some or cause other problems.
Okay everyone I really appreciate the replies. I have an update, but first I will respond to some of the points made above. This was due to the fact that whenever I called comcast, the extra router would just confuse them. So I made it simple for them and me by just removing it from the equation.
The second part of you question is "why use an extra router". Business users are very clearly told that the Comcast hardware is not meant to be an enterprise firewall - IE: Don't come crying to us if there is a security issue aka you got hackedbecause you are expected to BYO firewall.

I researched and saw that most recommended to enable Bridge mode on my Xfinity modem so that Orbi is doing all of the routing.
I did that, set up my Orbi, and my devices saw the new router. Problem is that I did not have an internet connection. I was on the phone with Comcast for 2 hours while they tried all kinds of things.
Finally, they said they could not help because my modem was working properly and had a signal, so since I was using a 3rd party product, they could no longer help. I had to have them disable bridge mode to get internet back up. Does anyone have suggestions? Should I forego this method and keep the Xfinity up as a router and have the Orbi run off of it?
In that case, I would more or less have 2 routers, correct? I am at a loss and don't what to do at this point. I also saw something about setting up Orbi as an Access Point. Confused at this point!! Thanks for any help! If you were able to setup the Xfinity modem in bridge mode, then your Orbi should have picked up an IP address. This is a silly thing to ask, but did you check to make sure that your ethernet cable from the Xfinity modem was plugged into the yellow WAN port on the Orbi Router?
Also, make sure you have Xfinity turn off the xfinity hotspot feature on the modem. You don't want the wireless signal from your modem interfering with the Orbi.
Even in bridge mode, Xfinity keeps that feature on. Yes, I was connected from the Xfinity modem ethernet port 1, that's what port Comcast said I should use and connected it to the yellow port on the Orbi. Do you have to have Xfinity turn off the hotspot feature? All of my devices could see the new Orbi router, but just no internet connection.
Strange that you weren't getting the internet to work with the modem in bridge mode. My only suggestion would be to try again, but this time don't power on the Orbi until the Xfinity modem finishes initializing in bridge mode. Once it is ready, turn on the Orbi and see if it connects. I have an Xfinity modem in bridge mode, with the hotspot turned off. The reason I had it turned off was because it sits right next to the Orbi router. I did not want the radios to interfere with my Orbi network.
So, unless you connect to Xfinity's hotspot at home, I don't see why you should keep it on. Do you have to turn it off?Here is my setup.
How to Restart Your Xfinity Gateway
Both the Hitron and Cisco are almost at factory defaults. Wifi both bands are turned OFF on the Hitron. If Hitron is in bridge mode, I get 80Mbps upload, 20Mbps download. Nothing settings or wiring is changed on the Cisco. I only log into the Hitron Even if I reboot the Cisco or reset to factory defaults, I get a speed degradation in bridge mode.Psalms 91
Any ideas why this so. I am not complaining about the speed at all. The non-bridge mode works with no freezes, no crashes, no restarts, no lost connections etc. Go to Solution. Due to time constraints, I never got to troubleshoot further the problem I originally posted about. I left my Hitron in Gateway mode despite having a Cisco router downstream of it. Upon seeing edgewater 's post above, I revisited the issue.
I checked my Cisco router's QoS setting. It was OFF. Check box empty. Something is going on here.
View solution in original post. Welcome to the Rogers Community Forums! When the modem is in bridge mode, your router should be acquiring the IP addresses. Do you remember if it is obtaining both the IPv4 and IPv6?
Is there a way for you to try different NAT throughputs in the router? Datalink may be able to shed more light on this issue. It may not be the root cause of the issue. Yes, I was wondering if your Cisco router was getting both IPs. When was the last time the speed was normal in the bridge mode? When the modem is in bridge mode what is the colour of the light at the Ethernet port? Green means Mbps and Amber equals Mbps link speed. I suggest checking if the firmware on the Cisco router is up to date.
The next step would be doing a factory reset on the Cisco router. There is always the possibility of a port controller problem, which could definitely slow the data rate thru that port.
If so, try another port to see if the same problem exists with another port. Looking around, I came across a post regarding slow data rates for your router.Belkin International, Inc. My wireless signal is horrible. I've tied moving the XB6. I bought and returned the Xfi Pods, and used my Netgear R in access point mode with a wifi extender. Nothing worked until today. My wildest dreams of whole hole wifi had come true. I left the Xi5-p connected to the second port on the XB6 Gateway but I couldn't get it to connect to cable service. I don't understand this because they are connected to the house and XB6 via coax. Why do the cable boxes that are hard wired via coax cease to work.
Now the odd thing is that the Xi5-p box that is directly connected to the home internet via ethernet to the Orbi router works fine.
So where the heck have my recording been going? So is the by-pass to MoCa being disabled just a matter of replacing my other 2 XiD-p boxes with Xi5-p boxes and connecting them to the Orbi's internet which is coming from Xfinity? I don't understand why they would offer a Bridge Mode option if their cable boxes would cease to work. This is kind of a huge deal nowadays considering how many people are going to their own Routers. This guide will walk you through turning on bridge mode for your Comcast Wireless Gateway. By default, your Wireless Gateway offers all the functionality of a modem and router in one device. It turns the signal coming in from the cable line into something a computer can understand, provides a way to connect multiple wired devices, a way for Wi-Fi devices to connect, and offers basic firewall capabilities.
When Bridge mode is enabled, the only function that is still active is turning the signal from the cable line into something a computer can understand; the same function a modem does. In order to make changes to the Wireless Gateway, you must be connected to it directly, and not to any other router you may have. When your Wireless Gateway is in bridge mode, there are some special considerations you must take into consideration. All wireless functionality is disabled.
You will need to use your own router to connect anything wirelessly. No routing is performed on traffic coming in. Because of how the Internet works, this means only one device, usually your own router, can be connected to your Wireless Gateway. No protection in the form of firewall or even simple network separation is performed. Again, this is fine if the device you intend to connect is your own router, it can provide those services for you.
This is where you will need to plug in your own router. Port one is the only active port for Internet service when Gateway is in bridge mode. In some cases, some older Wireless Gateways with outdated firmware installed on them can have problems showing the bridge mode setting.
You will need to reach out to Comcast to set bridge mode for you, or replace your Wireless Gateway with a newer model.
